Yvelines. Deconfinement: the good part given to bikes in Saint-Germain-en-Laye

With the deconfinement, Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Yvelines) and other cities in the agglomeration saw the creation of new facilities intended to encourage the use of the bicycle.

Long before deconfinement, the mayor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye ((Yvelines), Arnaud Péricard had expressed the wish to encourage his fellow citizens to turn to cycling a little more the day they could get out of their homes.

The idea, shared by many political leaders, was to offer an alternative to car for all those who, for fear of being infected with the virus, would not like to use public transport to get to work or for personal travel.

Avoid traffic congestion in the territory

The Community of agglomerations Saint-Germain loops of the Seine ((Casgbs) went in this direction by launching a program of temporary cycling facilities on the main axes of its territory.

The bicycle has emerged, if not as THE solution, as one of the best alternatives, de facto promoting social distancing, thus preventing the transmission of the virus. “

This plan, resulting from a reflection between the Casgbs, the Cities, the department and the Region to avoid automobile congestion of the territory, greatly benefits Saint-Germain-en-Laye which displays the largest number of streets concerned in the context development of one of the two major axes “of travel to major employment centers”, that going from Chambourcy to Chatou (see box).

The improvements were made in connection with the temporary pedestrianization of the city center implemented by the Saint-German municipality since May 12.

The second axis of travel to the major job centers connects Sartrouville to Bezons along the lines of the RER A.

Different methods have been used by Casgbs to carry out the temporary improvements.

Several solutions implemented

Several solutions make it possible to create temporary cycle paths or lanes: convert a car traffic lane, reduce the number of parking spaces, strengthen bicycle signage in streets limited to 30km / h, by creating or reinforcing road markings, by implanting beacons… “

Yellow markings representing a cyclist have thus appeared on many roads.

A lane reserved for bikes between Pecq and Chatou

On the D 186 between the Pont du Pecq and the Pont de Chatou, the departmental council decided to reduce the space usually occupied by cars by reserving, from May 19, one of the two lanes for bikes in each direction of traffic .

Wednesday, May 20, some markings on the ground still remained to be done to properly visualize the part reserved for bikes, especially before the Chatou bridge.

Counts for future adjustments

Casgbs indicates that all the arrangements put in place will be the subject of studies.

Car and bicycle counts will be carried out by Casgbs and the Yvelines Departmental Council for at least one month. These counts will make it possible to monitor traffic on the developed axes and to adjust the measures taken according to the saturation of car traffic. “
