‘Asian Champion’ Ulsan Hyundai failed to advance to the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup. He scored the opening goal against’North and Central America Champion’ Tigres UANL (Mexico), but lost in reverse. Director Hong Myung-bo, who returned to the scene after 4 years, tasted bitter.

Ulsan lost 1-2 to Tigres in the 2nd round of the 2020 Club World Cup (6th round) held at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on the 4th at 11 pm (KST). Two goals were awarded to former French national team Andre Pierre Gignac. It was painful to know that Yun Bit Garam’s Wonder Goal was judged offside by the car of a scam.

Ulsan, who participated in the Club World Cup for the second time following 2012, missed their first win. In the 2012 tournament, they lost 1-3 and 2-3 to Monterrey (Mexico) and Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Japan), respectively, staying in 6th place.

Coach Hong, who took the Ulsan baton and played the first official game, started the 4-2-3-1 formation. Ji-Hyun Kim comes to the top, and In-sung Kim and Dong-Joon Lee are in charge of the left and right attacks. Bitgaram Yoon, who was selected as the best player in the 2020 Asian Football Federation (AFC) Champions League, served as the commander of Jungwon.

Shin Hyung-min, who transferred from Jeonbuk Hyundai, played with Doo-jae Won and Double Volanchi, and the four back consisted of Seol Young-woo, Bulltwo, Kim Ki-hee, and Kim Tae-hwan. Jo Hyun-woo defended the goal.

The fight was tense from the beginning. Ulsan confronted Tigres equally and aimed at the opponent’s gap. In the 18th minute of the first half, Kim Ji-hyun’s right footed medium-range shot threatened Tigres.

Ulsan rode the flow and even broke the opening goal. In the 24th minute of the first half, Tigres opened the goal with a thoroughly prepared set piece. Kim Ki-hee took the corner kick raised by Yun Bit Garam with his head.

Ulsan’s lead didn’t last long. Tigres’ counterattack unfolded. Ulsan blocked the wave of offense with Cho Hyun-woo’s divine saving, but it was in jeopardy.

Eventually, Ulsan’s defense broke through. In the 38th minute of the first half, Tigres could not stop the set piece. A corner kick from Hafael Carioca goes through Diego Reyes’ header pass to Gignac, who was no mark in front of the goal. It wasn’t enough for Jo Hyun-woo to stop alone.

Tigres took the lead and overturned the game. Just before the end of the first half, Gignac’s header shot hit Kim Ki-hee’s left arm. The referee declared a penalty after grasping the situation through video reading (VAR). Kicker Gignac finished and turned 1-2.

In the second half, Ulsan was given a golden opportunity. In the 13th minute of the second half of the 13th minute, after receiving a long pass from Bultus, Yun Bit Garam floated and attempted a fantastic shot that shook the net.

Ulsan athletes, including Yun Bitgaram, couldn’t perform a celebration of joy. The assistant referee raised the flag. It wasn’t the coming. As a result of confirming through the TV broadcast, the infiltrating Yun Bitgaram was further inside the opponent’s defender.

Ulsan couldn’t find a way to attack afterwards. In the second half of the 28th minute, Kim Ji-hyun was excluded and hinter control was used as a joker, but the effect was insignificant.

On the other hand, Ulsan will have a loser in the match between Al Duhail (Qatar) and Al Ahli (Egypt) at 0 AM on the 8th and will play 5th place. Tigres, who finished in the quarterfinals, fights with Paumeiras (Brazil) at 3 am on the 8th for a right to the finals.
