Facebook is testing new ways to monetize short-form video content, the company announced today. Its first step is to enable ad support in stories.

In a blog post, Yoav Arnstein, Director of Facebook Application Monetization, said:

In the coming weeks, we’ll start testing the ability of content creators to monetize their Facebook Stories with ads that look like stickers and receive a portion of the resulting revenue. Although the initial test is small, we hope to expand to more content creators soon. And then expand it to short form videos on Facebook, potentially giving content creators a way to monetize that popular content.

The stories format, popularized by Snapchat, has proven to be resilient enough to appear on multiple platforms, including Twitter and LinkedIn. It makes sense that Facebook is taking advantage as the company tries to lure the creators of platforms like YouTube and Twitch.

It also expands the availability of InStream video ads to accommodate shorter content. Now, content creators can place ads in videos that are one minute or longer rather than three minutes or longer. However, to be a part of this expanded partnership, creators must have 600,000 minutes of viewing time in the past 30 days from the video – whether live, on-demand, or otherwise. They must also have five videos active and uploaded at the time of application.

The company will also now support InStream ads in live videos for more creators. Previously, it was by invitation only. Now, any creator who has achieved 60,000 minutes live in the last 60 days can qualify. Finally, it is investing $ 7 million to drive adoption of Stars (a virtual currency similar to TikTok giveaways) in live videos. This aims to increase creators’ income and encourage people to support their favorites.
