In the preliminary round group of four, Fischbacher met TV Augsburg. The Palatinate got off to a successful start in the most important team tournament in the youth field with a 6:2 win. The second encounter against VfL Lohbrügge turned into a thriller. As expected, the Lohbrüggers had lost the first game against the high tournament favorite TV Refrath with 0:8. In the NRW team, however, a line-up error was discovered afterwards, which led to the conversion to 8:0 for VfL Lohbrügge. The SVF had to win as high as possible against the representatives from the north in order to still have a small chance of progressing. The Fischbachers won all three doubles with David Eckerlin/Finn Busch, Moritz Miller/Bruno Steffen-Sánchez and Amelie Jacob/Lilly Reiter. Winning the girls’ doubles by 12-year-old Lilly and 14-year-old Amelie was a minor sensation. After the boys and Louisa Marburger had won in singles and mixed, the score was 8:0. Then the SVF met TV Refrath, who later won the title without losing a game. With the help of the Augsburg team, SV Fischbach advanced to the semi-finals.
Difficult endgames
There he faced Nordmeister Horner TV, a team peppered with national players. The Fischbacher offered the big favorite the forehead. In the end, Horner TV won 5:2. After the tough encounters, there wasn’t much left to gain in the match for third place against host TV Mülheim.
A very tough tournament with surprising twists and turns ended for the village club SV Fischbach with a place among the four best German teams. The team, which was completed by Fabian Rys, was proud to head home.
