Young queer councilor becomes mayor of oldest town in Wales

Hurcum was already deputy mayor and may wear the mayor’s chain for a year. Bangor, in the northeast, is the oldest town in Wales. About 18,000 people live there, about half of whom study at Bangor University.

Hurcum came to Bangor from London to study. The newly elected mayor has always been interested in politics, but that grew stronger at university. “Politics affects everything and decides everything in a community,” Hurcum said North Wales Live.

“You can have experience in politics and you don’t have to be old. I am 22 and yet I have been a councilor for four years and a deputy mayor for one year. I have enough experience and enough experienced people around me to make decisions.”
