Youth media and social media. JAMES 2020.

Is our democracy in danger? You may wonder when reading the JAMES 2020 study on internet use by young people. It appears again that all traditional media are consulted less and less in favor of social media …

In 2020, young Swiss reported spending on average up to nearly five hours a day on weekends on their smartphones (+2 hours compared to 2018) and around three hours a day on weekdays (+40 minutes compared to 2018). to 2018). In contrast, internet use is declining, according to a communicated Swisscom and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) on the study carried out every two years.

This last observation allows us to put our finger on the obvious. The line between the use of a smartphone and the use of the Internet is no longer really clear. Young people are watching television and series more often than before on their phones. In general, they mainly use their mobile phones to access messaging services and social networks or to surf the Internet, according to the authors of JAMES 2020.

Instagram and TikTok are a hit

Some 90% of teens surveyed have a profile on Instagram and Snapchat. Three-quarters of all young people have a TikTok account (in 2018, they were 37%). Facebook confirms its “geriatric” status. It is no longer used regularly in 2020 by only 14% of 12-19 year-olds, against 79% in 2014 …

The audience for traditional print media continues to shrink. Young people are reading less and less newspapers and magazines, whether in print or online. They prefer to stay informed through search engines, social networks and video portals, the same platforms they use for entertainment. If radio and TV are also suffering, as the graph opposite shows, music and video streaming is exploding.

Coronavirus and democracy

In total, nearly 1,000 young people aged 12 to 19 were interviewed for this study, which is in its sixth edition. Note that this probe was carried out in part during containment due to the pandemic. Certain changes are probably related to this situation.

My comment? The media are still the fourth estate and thus contribute to the proper functioning of democracy. While it is gratifying to see young people directly access all the information available on the web, including the worst, it is more worrying to see them invariably turn away from one of the pillars of democracy …
