YB’s path to the Champions League leads via the so-called Champions Path, which begins in the second qualifying round. That means: The Bernese do not meet teams from the big countries whose masters qualify directly for the group stage, but only masters from countries from 11th place onwards. So the champions of the top five leagues Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France are excluded – as are those of Russia, Portugal, Belgium, Ukraine, Turkey and Holland.
The highest endowed champions are those from Austria, the Czech Republic and Greece etc. In the second round, the opponent of YB is either Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands (most likely) or Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia).
In the third round, which will only be decided in a single game on September 15 or 16, the possible opponents for the YB that is still seeded are: Karabach (Azerbaijan), Maccabi Tel-Aviv (Israel), Legia Warsaw ( Poland), Molde FK (Norway) and FK Sarajewo (Bosnia-Herzegovina). The home right is drawn by lot. The loser comes to the Europa League playoffs.
The last hurdle awaits in the playoffs, which will be played in a classic style with a return leg on 22./23. resp. 29./30. September will be held. YB would be unset. If all seeded teams prevail by then, the likely opponents are Salzburg, Piraeus, Celtic or Dinamo Zagreb. The loser goes to the Europa League group stage.
All games take place to the exclusion of fans.
