“Mexican agriculture produces high-value foods such as avocado, tomato and berries … The country is one of the main agricultural producers in the world,” says Gianni Canetti, general director and country manager of Yara Mexico, producer of fertilizers of Norwegian origin. It plans to complete the construction of a new processing plant in Tamaulipas in January.
The work represents an investment of between 12 and 15 million dollars and will replace another plant of the company whose capacity was 25,000 tons per year, used mainly for processing (reception and packaging) of commodities such as urea and ammonium sulfate.
The new terminal will have a capacity of 120,000 tons and will start with 50,000 in the first year.
It is in the vicinity of the port of Altamira and has access to the main highway nodes of the entity. From that point, it will import products with higher value such as soluble and non-soluble calcium nitrate, and will supply them to farmers in the regions of Bajío and La Laguna, northern Veracruz and Tamaulipas, among others with agricultural potential including Coahuila, Durango. , Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí.
These entities are part of four regions identified as strategic for the cultivation of bell pepper (bell pepper) in the spring-summer season (PV), according to the report on the National Agricultural Planning 2017-2030 for chili peppers and peppers, prepared by the former Secretary of Agriculture. A similar document places the same entities in addition to Chihuahua and Guanajuato, as strategic for the cultivation of tomatoes.
Attractive distance
Most of Yara’s products are imported from Europe. They arrive across the Atlantic to Veracruz, where the company has two other processing terminals in Minatitlán. On the Pacific side, it has two more terminals: in Topolobampo, in Sinaloa and in Manzanillo, in Colima.
