The Council of Galicia will begin a free vaccination campaign against bluetongue that affects cattle and sheep.

This initiative, which will begin on January 2, 2024, is presented as a crucial measure to protect the Galician livestock industry and prevent the spread of this disease.

Importance of Vaccination in the Fight Against Bluetongue

Bluetongue is a viral disease transmitted by vectors, particularly by certain types of mosquitoes, that affects ruminants such as sheep, cows and goats. Characterized by fever, inflammation of the mouth, lameness and, in severe cases, can lead to the death of the animal, this disease not only causes suffering to affected animals, but also represents a significant threat to the rural economy.

Xunta Vaccination Strategy: A Proactive Response

The Xunta’s vaccination strategy will be implemented in two phases:

  • Home in Restricted Areas: In November 2023, vaccination will begin in the restricted areas, which include the entire province of A Coruña and the veterinary districts of Mariña Central, A Mariña Oriental, A Mariña Occidental, Terra Chá Guitiriz, Terra Chá Castro, Terra Chá Vilalba, Meira , Lugo, A Ulloa, Os Ancares. y A Fonsagrada, in the province of Lugo. The campaign will start in Santa Comba and Mazaricos, in A Coruña; and in Pastoriza, Portomarín and Barreiros, in Lugo. This initial phase focuses on areas where the disease has been most prevalent.

  • Extension to Previously Delimited Districts: Starting in December, the campaign will expand to the regions that have already been delimited and vaccinated throughout 2023, covering additional provinces such as Ourense and Pontevedra, and parts of Lugo such as Sarria, Chantada and Terra de Lemos-Quiroga.

  • Flexible Options for Farmers

Farmers have the option of vaccinating their animals through two main routes:

    • Free Veterinary Personnel Services: Farmers can access vaccination services at no cost, provided by qualified veterinarians.

    • Health Defense Groups (ADSG): These groups offer additional support and facilitate the vaccination process.

It is important to highlight that the Xunta has also authorized vaccination by all veterinary personnel who have requested it, ensuring that the vaccine is available free of charge for these professionals.

    Prevention Before Vector Season

The Xunta emphasizes the importance of carrying out vaccination before the start of the vector season. This not only protects the animals and prevents the spread of the disease, but also ensures that livestock farms do not face restrictions on the movement of their animals.

Conclusion: Commitment to Animal Health and the Rural Economy

This free vaccination campaign demonstrates the continued commitment of the Xunta de Galicia to animal health and the well-being of the rural economy. By taking proactive measures like this, Galicia positions itself as a leader in animal health management and protecting its valuable livestock industry.
