Presidential candidate Barcelona Victor Font intends to return Xavi Hernandez to the Camp Nou. Fonts want Xavi to stay at Barcelona as long Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United.
Victor Font is one of the Barcelona presidential candidates to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu who resigned. Elections are scheduled to be held on January 24.
If elected as president of Barcelona, Font wants to bring Xavi home to the Camp Nou to become a coach. Xavi is currently the coach of the Qatari team, Al Sadd.
“We decided a few years ago that the best person to help us build our organization was Xavi,” Font said in an interview with Reuters as quoted. ESPN.
“Ideally we could put Xavi as general manager for years like Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. But if he needs to play another role, he can be flexible. Few people have leadership qualities like him.”
However, Font emphasized that it does not mean Xavi will replace Ronald Koeman in the near future. Koeman was appointed Barcelona coach last summer and is contracted until 2022.
“It’s a decision the sporting director will make, but we are grateful that Ronald took up this challenge in such a difficult time. We are delighted to see him make such bold decisions and empowering young players with potential,” said Font.
“Xavi has a long-term perspective. He is only 40 years old, he once told me that his professional career as a coach is still long. So there will be no tension or conflict,” he stressed.
Xavi is one of the important pillars when Barcelona is in its heyday. He made 767 appearances during his time for the Blaugrana in 1998-2015 and won various prestigious trophies including eight LaLiga titles and four Champions League titles.
