Urologist Hu Weifeng, 40, worked at Wuhan Central Hospital, the city where the virus emerged in late 2019. He died after spending more than four months ill, reported the Chinese television station CCTV.
He is the sixth doctor in this hospital in Wuhan to die of coronavirus, among dozens of infected health professionals.
Hu Weifeng’s case gained national attention because the doctor’s skin began to darken due to liver damage caused by the virus.
THE death of his colleague Li Wenliang, 34, in February, provoked strong protests in the country. Li had been warned by the authorities for his alert messages on social networks regarding the first cases of the new coronavirus.
After his death, the Chinese government considered him a martyr and cleaned up his image. Since mid-February, COVID-19 cases have declined significantly in China, which has so far registered 4,634 deaths, according to official data.
