As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread, already killing more than 160,000 people worldwide, a Russian immunologist has raised the possibility of a new epidemic wave due to the lack of a preventive vaccine. However, according to him, it would be lower.

A second wave of the coronavirus epidemic is possible, but it should probably be weaker, said Sergei Nedospassov, immunologist of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with Parlamentskaïa gazeta, the publication of the Assembly Federal Republic of Russia.

Sergei Nedospassov said the lack of a vaccine would serve as breeding ground for the start of a second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic.

“If there is no preventive vaccine, then the second wave is possible. But it will most likely be much lower, ”he said.

The immunologist pointed out that it was not yet possible to predict exactly when this would happen. According to him, the difficulty of this prediction is linked to the specificities of the virus, health systems and the life of each population.

The possibility of a resurgence of the Covid-19 already mentioned

Earlier, Zhang Wenhong, who heads the Shanghai Covid-19 panel, said that mankind will not be able to defeat the coronavirus pandemic this summer, as a new wave will be possible in November, reported the Global Times.

According to him, thanks to the experience acquired during the current pandemic, especially in the area of diagnostics, the next wave should not be as serious. However, he said that controlling the epidemiological situation in the world would not depend on China, the United States or Europe, but on the countries that are the least able to control the situation in the face of the epidemic.

Pandemic update

To date, the coronavirus pandemic has already killed more than 160,000 people worldwide, about two-thirds of them in Europe, says the Johns-Hopkins University report. In total, more than 2,300,000 people have been infected with the disease.
