This is the story of an idea that was born in the classroom and is now finalizing its landing in Latin America. How to get the best notes to study and from the best students? The founders, with studies in Industrial Engineering, Law or Business, found the key: Woulah. A digital platform where students can upload their class notes.

The key to the creature is in the monetization of notes. The “content creators” upload their materials that they sort by university, grade and course. Once incorporated into the platform, Woulah inserts advertising as happens with the content of YouTube. In return, students receive financial compensation for each download.

The idea grew over time until 2015, at which time the company was constituted and the team becomes professional. Currently, the youth leadership of Wuolah is made up of Enrique Ruiz, Francisco Martinez and Javier Ruiz under the leadership of the CEO and product manager, Jaime Quintero.

What started as a shortcut to getting better grades gradually turned into a business idea. In six months, Wuolah had 36,000 registered people, a sign that the platform could grow regionally, nationally and internationally. “In Seville it grew a lot and then it spread. First in Andalusia and then in Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona”, Says Enrique Ruiz.

The move from idea to company was promoted by Minerva program, a plan for start-ups willing to grow to become stable businesses. Promoted by the Junta de Andalucía and Vodafone, it focuses on promoting business projects related to information and communication technologies.

Jump to Latin America

Woulah is now in a financing process with private investors in Spain. However, they do not close the door to internationals considering their future plans. In his interview with Invertia, Enrique Ruiz advances that the next goal is Latin America.

“We want the platform to be a leader in Spanish,” he says, having more than four million documents in Spanish. Among the ambitions in the future is also the improve the functionality of the platform. “Our idea is to facilitate the work of content creators with more formats and better remuneration.”

With this goal in mind, Wuolah’s figures support his dreams. It has more than a million registered university students who provide notes on more than 365 universities. Its tentacles are present in all the university centers of Andalusia, as well as in La Complutense in Madrid or in Barcelona.

Compatible with teaching

In all this history, teaching has an important role since the content of his classes appears later reflected in Wuolah’s notes. “The platform is not a library,” they point out from the company. “The students talk to each other and help each other improve their grades.”

They stand out from Woulah that they are one more help to study, as verified during the 2020 lockdown by Covid-19. The platform was opened to schools and institutes before the fall of their educational platforms that they did not have the capacity for so much student traffic.

Woulah’s goal now passes through change the university education system. “We would like the students to come to class with their notes so that they could dedicate the classes to learning,” Ruiz aspires.
