Worst situation in fifty years: Lightning has flooded Sydney

Sydney is experiencing the worst flooding in decades. Warragamb’s largest dam, which supplies drinking water to most of the city, has spilled, causing both rivers to rise, surrounding Australia’s most populous city.

Security forces ordered the immediate evacuation of people living in low-lying areas. In the most populous state of New South Wales, a “life-threatening” condition is said to be imminent.

About 13 areas received flood warnings and evacuation calls. According to the Prime Minister of the local regional government Gladys Berejiklian, the weather is worse than expected; especially for low-lying areas in northwest Sydney.

“Yesterday (Friday) we hoped that it would only be an event that would take place once every 20 years, now it looks like an event that will take place once every 50 years,” said the prime minister. The call for evacuation is probably waiting for more 4,000 people, Berejiklian previously warned that heavy rains over the area would last until the end of next week.

“Extensive damage is caused not only by rain, but also by strong winds,” meteorologist Jonathan How told ABC. Heavy rains will whip Sydney and the rest of the state on Sunday, the meteorologist said, according to which it will rain up to 200 millimeters of rainfall in some areas.

Australian rescue services received about 600 phone calls a night from Saturday to Sunday, asking for more than 60 of the callers in need of rescue from the flooded houses. About 6,000 calls have been received since rain rained over East Australia on Thursday.

The rapidly rushing water on the footage of television stations and from social networks flooded houses, roads, uprooted trees and destroyed transport infrastructure. Rescuers estimate that up to hundreds of homes will be damaged.

Due to the weather, some schools have canceled classes today, some roads are closed and supplies of covid-19 vaccine to Sydney will be slowed, disrupting the government’s plan to vaccinate nearly six million people in the coming weeks.
