Joe Biden’s administration will announce changes to asylum policy on Thursday, according to leaks published by Axios and Politico. The rule would allow immigration officials to bar migrants from asylum within days, or perhaps a few hours, after illegally crossing the border.
Politico adds that the changes would allow US immigration authorities to accelerate asylum request resolutions and expedite expulsions.
The measure would be part of a strategy that the White House has been considering for several weeks aimed at stopping the crossing of undocumented immigrants on the border and decongest the immigration courts, which have accumulated more than 3.4 million cases, about 2 million of them registered during the current government.
According to anonymous sources mentioned by Politico, a broader use of border agent discretion “deems larger numbers of asylum seekers potentially ineligible to remain in the country” “due to risks to national security or public safety.” ”.
