What is going on in Ukraine?
Ukraine and Russia have been at loggerheads since 2014. The conflict started with major anti-corruption protests, the ‘Euromajdan’, in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. During those protests, President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country. He was predominantly pro-Russian.
After Yanukovych’s departure, Moscow wanted to safeguard its own interests in Ukraine. Russia took the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine with military personnel. Moscow then supported a rebel uprising in eastern Ukraine. That war between the separatists and the Ukrainian government army continues to this day. About 14,000 people died in 7 years.

President Biden says he remains concerned about increasing Russian military activity. “We’ve been eyeing this for a while. I think it will end in a long discussion with Putin.”
Putin’s Red Line
The Russian president previously announced that installing missile defense systems in Ukraine would cross a border for him. He called it ‘a red line’.
Biden said he was not impressed. He says he is working with European allies to prevent a Russian attack on Ukraine.
