BALI, investor.id – The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (Perkeni), the Danish Embassy to Indonesia, and Novo Nordisk launched a chatbot & public service advertisement to increase public awareness of diabetes.

The launch of a service called TanyaGendis was carried out at the 2021 Health Business Gathering event in Bali, Friday (12/3/2021).

The launch is also part of the commemoration of World Diabetes Day and the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Along with TanyaGendis, the Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin also launched a public service advertisement.

TanyaGendis provides various information about diabetes and helps people understand their respective diabetes risks. Gendis stands for ‘prevent & control diabetes’.

The TanyaGendis service can be accessed via the Whatsapp application.

To access TanyaGendis, the public can call 0812 8000 5858 via WhatsApp. In addition, a number of public service advertisements will be posted on various digital platforms and public places. This ad invites people to live a healthier lifestyle to prevent diabetes before it’s too late.

The chatbot and PSA are the implementation of the intergovernmental memorandum of understanding (G2G MoU) between Indonesia and Denmark on health cooperation.

The Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, HE Lars Bo Larsen said, the chatbot and public service advertisements that were launched were a concrete act of the agreement between Denmark and Indonesia. “We believe that these chatbots and advertisements will continue to motivate people to actively beat diabetes. In the future, we will accelerate cooperation in the health sector with Indonesia to improve public health management,” he explained.

When handing over this virtual chatbot program to the Ministry of Health, Vice President & General Manager of Novo Nordisk Indonesia, Anand Shetty said, together with the Ministry of Health and Perkeni, his party will increase access to education about diabetes to people throughout Indonesia in order to improve the lives of people, diabetics, and improve prevention. “We developed TanyaGendis which is a virtual chatbot available on WhatsApp, because we want to make it easier for all people to get information about diabetes,” he explained.

In addition, public service advertisements will also be disseminated through various social media and public places to reach the public, including the younger generation, so that they can lead a better lifestyle and prevent diabetes from an early age.

“The dissemination of information through various platforms is our strategy to improve health by utilizing digital technology. The information available in chatbots and storylines in this public service advertisement will encourage a healthier lifestyle and educate the public to be able to independently assess diabetes risk. We believe that this chatbot and public service advertisement about diabetes will educate and empower people to improve their health,” he added.

Anand further said that the chatbot campaign and public service advertisements also highlight that collective and individual actions will continue to drive progress and continue to move us to beat diabetes.

In addition to these two launches, Novo Nordisk Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Health, and the Danish Embassy to Indonesia have held several activities to commemorate World Diabetes Day and the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, such as;

Diabetes Sufferers Increase

Diabetes is a chronic disease that can cause various complications. Globally, it is estimated that 537 million people have diabetes. With this number, approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide live with diabetes. This figure is projected to increase to 643 million in 2030 and 784 million in 2045 if no intervention is carried out.

Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PB Perkeni), Prof. Dr. dr. Ketut Suastika, Sp.PD-KEMD said the number of diabetics in Indonesia continues to increase from 10.7 million in 2019 to 19.5 million in 2021. This year, Indonesia is ranked fifth with the highest number of diabetics in the world, up from seventh place in 2019. “This increase is very concerning,” he said at the event, Friday (12/3/2021).

Mentioned, the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia reached 19.5 million. However, only 2 million have been diagnosed and received treatment.

“Prevention of diabetes and its complications, as well as the diagnosis and self-monitoring of blood glucose levels are very important components of the health system. However, there are still many problems such as lack of public awareness and understanding, stigma of chronic disease, and misinformation about diabetes. The low level of public awareness of diabetes is still a major challenge that causes an increasing number of undiagnosed diabetics and can result in uncontrolled blood glucose levels and consequently lead to various complications,” added Prof. Suastika.

Regarding this condition, the Indonesian Ministry of Health and Novo Nordisk Indonesia have signed a partnership agreement this year to improve and strengthen efforts to develop sustainable diabetes treatment services in Indonesia and prioritize early diagnosis and optimal control through four areas in line with the 2021-2024 National Health Strategic Plan. One of the main activities in this partnership is the awareness program.
