World War II aircraft bomb detonated in Prinsenbeek | NOW

A World War II plane bomb, which was found near Prinsenbeek on Tuesday 21 July, was detonated there on Friday afternoon.

The blast is reflected in the Facebook-page from the municipality of Breda.

The German airplane bomb of about 500 kilos has been in the same location for 75 years and was only discovered during preparatory work for the Noordrand Midden nature project. The explosive did not endanger the immediate area.

Because the bomb could not be moved according to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD), the explosive was detonated at the site. To reduce the impact of the explosion, the bomb was covered with about 1,000 cubic meters of sand, leaving the bomb under a 7-meter layer of sand. The peat soil around the explosive was also excavated, so that the vibrations of the explosion could only be felt in the immediate vicinity. Preparations for the blast started as early as July 22.

During the explosion, no people were allowed to be within a radius of 250 meters around the bomb. The vibrations from the blast were felt up to 450 meters from the bomb.

“Breda and Prinsenbeek in particular were fought over during the Second World War. Traces of this can still be found, mostly underground,” Mayor Paul Depla of Breda said earlier.
