World Life Expectancy Drops After the Covid-19 Pandemic, This Region Has The Most Drastic Change

GENEVA, KOMPAS.com – World life expectancy down since pandemic Covid-1 hit, with the 2021 average dropping nearly two years lower than in 2019, according to the latest world population report.

However, there are a number of countries where the change in life expectancy has decreased drastically.

The new report published by the United Nations on Monday (11/7/2022) shows how the Covid-19 pandemic is driving change in the world’s population.

It was reported that global life expectancy down to 71 years in 2021, down from 72.8 years in 2019.

The first cases of Covid were recorded in China in late 2019, before other countries started detecting infections as early as 2020.

Since then, more than 6.7 million people are estimated to have died from the virus, according to a tally by Reuters.

However, the UN report reveals that “the impact of the pandemic on life expectancy varies across regions and countries.”

“In Central and South Asia as well as in Latin America and the Caribbean, life expectancy at birth fell by nearly three years between 2019 and 2021.”

“In contrast, the combined populations of Australia and New Zealand rose by 1.2 years due to lower risk of death during the pandemic for some causes of death.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations said in some countries, such as Bolivia and Russia, the decline was even more dramatic over four years.

A very large decrease in life expectancy is also projected to be experienced in addition to the two countries, Botswana, Lebanon, Mexico and Oman.

The United Nations estimates that global life expectancy will bounce back and increase to around 77.2 years by 2050.
