Several world leaders met in Berlin on Sunday at a summit organized by Germany to discuss the tense situation in Libya. They reached an agreement there that all the countries involved will adhere to the United Nations arms embargo.
Around ten countries were represented at the Berlin summit. Among others, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin were present in Berlin on Sunday. The meeting discusses the need to improve the security situation in Libya.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press conference after the summit that all parties had reached an agreement. The UN arms embargo must be maintained and strengthened to achieve a long-term ceasefire.
Macron said that “the presence of Syrian and other foreign forces must end immediately”. France supports Libyan General Khalifa Haftar and sees him as a strong leader.
Erdogan spoke against Haftar. “To implement other phases of the political process and the solution, Haftar’s aggressive attitude must come to an end,” said the Turkish president. Prior to the Berlin summit, Putin said he would not lose hope for a successful outcome in Libya. “Russia and Turkey have taken a very good step by demanding Libyan parties to stop fighting,” Putin said on Sunday.
Many countries engaged in Libyan conflict
There are now many different countries involved in the war in the North African country, such as France, Russia, Turkey and Egypt. There has been political chaos for about ten years and an end to this unsafe situation does not seem in sight.
The Libyan General Hafter controls the service in the east of the North African country. For a number of months he has been making an advance to Tripoli. At the beginning of January, Turkey decided to send troops to the country to defend the city. Russia and Turkey made a few attempts to reach a ceasefire, but these have been unsuccessful to date.
