World Health Organization Confirms New Covid Variant JN.1 in Kerala and Global Spread: Symptoms and Precautions

The World Health Organization has included the new covid variant JN.1, which has been confirmed in Kerala, in the Variant of Interest category. At the same time, the World Health Organization stated that the new strain may not pose a major threat to public health.

The figures show that this variant has been confirmed in thirty eight countries including India.

The JN.1 variant, first discovered in Luxembourg, is a sub-variant of Omicron. In the background of rising disease rates, the Center had issued precautionary instructions to the states. An emergency meeting is being held today (Wednesday) under the leadership of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandavya to assess the increasing number of Covid cases in the country. State Health Ministers, Health Department Secretaries, Union Health Ministry officials, Union Territories concerned officials etc. will participate in the meeting.

What are the symptoms to look out for?

According to the World Health Organization, the JN1 variant presents with mild to moderate symptoms.

The main symptoms are fever, runny nose, sore throat and headache. Some patients also present with mild respiratory symptoms. They usually heal within four to five days.

Apart from these, experts say that some new symptoms are also seen with this variant. Loss of appetite, constant cravings etc. are some of them. You may also experience excessive fatigue, muscle atrophy, etc. It is said that you may feel tired more than other covid variants and you may also see tiredness even while doing small tasks.

Gas related problems may also be experienced in some special situations. It may affect the digestive system. Vomiting, nausea etc. will appear in them.

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) also states that JN.1 will be more spreadable than other variants. The CDC believes that the increase in patients is due to the holidays and the low rate of taking the Covid vaccine.
