The next two rounds of the South American qualification for the 2022 World Cup at the end of March will be canceled due to the corona pandemic. The background is travel restrictions.

Because of the pandemic, there are currently severe restrictions on returnees in Great Britain. So far there are no special regulations for footballers. Several Champions League and Europa League games have therefore already had to be relocated to other European countries.

Most recently, a number of coaches from European clubs such as Pep Guardiola from Manchester City or Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool had emphasized that they did not want their South American professionals to travel to the internationals if they had to be in quarantine for a longer period of time. “That doesn’t make any sense,” said Guardiola.

Catch-up dates still unclear

FIFA President Gianni Infantino called on the clubs on Friday to turn off the players “as long as their health is not endangered”. The national associations are dependent on the TV revenue for the international matches.

It is not yet clear when the games canceled by the South American association Comnebol will be rescheduled. Among other things, a duel between arch-rivals Brazil and Argentina was on the agenda on March 30th.
