Health authorities from Chile, Guatemala and Mexico met on July 20, 2023 in the workshop “Exchange of experiences on universal access and Primary Health Care”, within the framework of the United Nations Development Account project “Resilient health systems with universal coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean”. The objective of the workshop was for the participating countries to share testimonials, lessons, and challenges regarding the universalization of health and the strategy of Primary Health Care (PHC) as a strategic component in addressing health inequalities.
The workshop allowed the exchange of ideas and favored contact between countries to evaluate possible synergies between their projects and programs, recognizing both the common aspects between them and the heterogeneity of the local and specific reality of each territory. The challenge of building capacities and tools relevant to contemporary challenges was highlighted, endowing the region’s health systems with resilience.
María Luisa Marinho, from ECLAC’s Social Development Division, presented the project to the participating countries and elaborated on the work that has been carried out during 2023 and the projections for the following years. The event was attended by Edwin Montúfar, Vice Minister of Primary Health Care of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala (MSPAS), Bernardo Martorell, Coordinator of the Reform of the Ministry of Health of Chile (MINSAL), Matías Goyenechea of the National Health Fund of Chile (FONASA) and Raciel Ramírez, from the Division of Innovation and Financing Models of the Directorate of Strategic Planning for Institutional Transformation of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), together with their work teams.
