Work, employment at the highest level since 1977: +60.5%, a record – Corriere.it

Half a million new jobs in one year. Almost all of which are permanent. More than 82,000 in just one month. And the employment rate that breaks through the ceiling of 60% (60.5%, +1.5% in 12 months) and reaches a record: never so high since 1977, first year of the Istat historical series. The data for the month of October released yesterday by the Institute of Statistics certify that employment in Italy continues to grow and it is driven by stable jobs. Over 500 thousand in one year (+3.4%); 117 thousand in just one month (+0.8% compared to the month of September). And the greatest increase was recorded in the over 50 age group (+4.5% in one year equal to 393 thousand units) and the number of job seekers decreased – minus 321 thousand, – and the inactive between 15 and 64 years, minus 366 thousand.

A short-term employees also decreased by 1.2% compared to October 2021, when in the post-Covid phase uncertainty had instead pushed fixed-term contracts: last October there were 2.98 million. The unemployment rate is at 7.8%, those of inactivity at 34.3%. Among young people (15-24), the unemployment rate is 23.9%, down 3.7% compared to October 2021.

Positive and encouraging data for trade unions and trade associations. But the Cisl invites attention to the drop in fixed-term contracts: “It’s not good news because it could signal a loss of confidence and risk putting an end to the virtuous fixed-term hiring-stabilisation mechanism”. And he therefore asks the government for “expansive policies”. There Uil reiterates its no to vouchers: «If the production system is investing more in good employment – asks the confederal secretary Ivana Veronese -, why reverse this course with the all-round reintroduction of the voucher, an instrument that widens social inequalities and increases the risk of in-work poverty?» . Confcommercio instead signals the criticality of the self-employed which in October fell by 17,000 units for the second consecutive month, “continuing to register a progressive downward trend”. Same fear also for Confesercenti which therefore asks the government for “measures and resources aimed at protecting entrepreneurial employment”.
