Apple’s future AR/VR headset system could be “xrOS”

A Apple took another step towards launching his own mixed reality headseta device that is expected to be launched next year and will combine augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies.

According to the information of Marco GumanYes Bloomberg, Apple has changed the name of the operating system that will come with the device. According to the reporter’s unnamed sources, the company has dropped out the old name “realityOS” and has now adopted the nomenclature “xOS”.

The new name comes just to emphasize that this is a “mixed reality” device, as the acronym XR is often used to refer to extended reality (extended reality), a concept that encompasses both AR and VR.

As Gurman pointed out, while augmented reality overlays the real-world view with virtual graphics and information, virtual reality is a full immersive experience for activities like playing games and watching videos.

The “xrOS” should have exclusive versions of Apple applications, for example Messages and the Maps – and also with some kind of App Storewhere other developers can host and distribute their proprietary software.

Apple’s expectation is that the mixed reality device will become its new “big product”, which hasn’t been seen in Cupertino since the launch of the apple watch (in 2015) – today, one of the largest sources of profit of the company.
