The 49-year-old could not believe his eyes when he discovered the win in the National Lottery’s mobile app. Joe had to put down the phone before he dared to count how many digits there were in the amount.

The wife was still in bed when the message about the staggering amount had begun to sink in. Instead of waking her up, Joe took a quick check on the real estate website Rightmove – and turned off the filter for the price.

“I have a secret to tell you,” he repeated as he woke his wife 20 minutes later. She herself was sure that her husband had seen wrong because he had not worn glasses.

– We thought it must be a mistake. That there was something wrong with the app. So I went to make some coffee and start the day, says Jessica.

The couple, who together have two children, say they do not want to spend the money on materialistic things, but rather experiences.

Do not want to lie

When asked why they wanted to go public, the couple answers that they did not want to force friends and family to keep it a secret, and describes it as a “burden”.

– We did not want to say “this is a secret, and you are not allowed to tell anyone”, Joe explains.

He wants to be able to take friends on nice vacations without having to lie about where the money comes from.

– We see the gain as a great victory for the whole family, says the father of the family. He has currently taken time off from work, but admits that he has plans to resign from his position in communication and sales.
