Women give birth to each other’s babies after a fertility clinic error | Abroad

The couple says to Sky News that they suppressed their doubts about their daughter because they had “fallen in love” with the baby and trusted completely the IVF process they had undergone. However, their suspicions were confirmed by a DNA test seven weeks after birth: the girl was not related to any of them.

Through the fertility clinic, the couple then found out that Daphna was pregnant with another couple’s baby, and that the other woman had given birth to their biological daughter. The clinic turned out to have swapped the couples’ embryos. The two girls were born a week apart in September 2019. The girls are according to Sky News ‘exchanged’ again in January 2020.

“I was overwhelmed with feelings of fear, betrayal, anger and heartbreak,” Daphna said at a press conference in which the couple announced a lawsuit against the California fertility clinic. “During pregnancy I never had the chance to feel my own daughter grow and bond with her.”

The switch was also a big shock for the eldest daughter of the couple. The seven-year-old girl found out after seven weeks that her sister turned out not to be her sister. “Telling her that was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life,” said mother Daphna.

Both children are now back with their biological families. The four parents will do their best to keep in touch in the future. “They were just as in love with our biological daughter as we were with theirs,” father Alexander said in the press conference.

The fertility clinic is being charged with medical malpractice, breach of contract, negligence and fraud.
