Women Candidates for the Lower House Reach Record Number in the US

The number of women registered to obtain a seat in the Lower House in the next elections reached a new record, announced on Friday a referent center of feminine political activity in the United States.

“To date, 243 women have secured their candidacy for the US House of Representatives” in the November 3 congressional elections, a figure that represents “a new record,” reported the Center for American Women and Politics ( CAWP), which is owned by Rutgers University.

The previous record dates from 2018, with 234 women, according to the CAWP, which clarified that there are still primary elections to be held in 13 states, so the current count could rise.

Of the current candidates, 74 belong to the Republican party, also a record number, well above the previous record in 2004, which had reached 53 nominations.

On the Democratic side, 169 women are running for a seat in the House of Representatives, less than the record for the 2018 midterm elections, with 182 candidates for that party, the CAWP noted.

In January 2019, an unprecedented number of women and members of minorities entered Congress, who won the position in the midterm elections of November 2018.

That incorporation came in a year marked by the movement against #MeToo sexual abuse and mistrust of President Donald Trump.

About a quarter of congressional seats are currently held by women, with 101 representatives in the Lower House (88 of them Democrats) and 26 senators (17 of them Democrats).

In the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who has held the presidency of that body for the second time since January 2019, became the first woman in history to hold that crucial position in 2007.
