Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, famous for his misogyny, had no hesitation toward his daughter. He dismissed the possibility of running for his daughter, who is said to be a leading runner in the next presidential election, saying, “The position of president is not something women should do.”
According to Reuters on the 15th, President Duterte said this in his speech at the opening of the highway the day before. “My daughter will not run for the presidential election in 2022,” he said. “I told my daughter not to run because I didn’t want her to walk the road I went through.” Up to this point, it deserved to be read by a father’s remarks about his daughter.
But soon after, misogyny and demeaning followed. “The presidential position is not a woman’s job. The emotional structure of men and women is completely different,” he said. “(The female president) becomes an idiot, and that’s a sad story.”
Duterte’s eldest daughter, Sarah Duterte Carpio, 42, was recently ranked first in the 2022 presidential poll. As a former lawyer, he succeeded his father as Mayor of Divao and solidified his image as a successor. He is also taking the role of’First Lady’ instead of the vacant first lady.
Despite Duterte’s remarks, two women presidents have emerged from the Philippines. Corason Aquino (1986-1992) and Gloria Arroyo (2001-2010).
