Woman Discovers Brain Tumor After Noticing Drooping Eye in Times Square Selfie

During her visit to Times Square, Megan Troutwine, like any typical tourist, snapped a selfie to capture the beautiful scenery and commemorate the moment. However, little did she know that this innocent act would lead her on a terrifying and unexpected journey.

Upon reviewing the selfie, Megan noticed something unusual. One of her eyes appeared to be drooping slightly in the picture, causing her immediate concern. Megan couldn’t shake off the unsettling feeling that this physical change might be connected to ongoing cognitive problems she had been experiencing.

Alarmed by her suspicion, Megan wasted no time and promptly scheduled an appointment with her doctor in 2016. Her doctor referred her to a neurologist for further investigations.

Medical tests revealed the worrisome truth—Megan had a large tumor in her brain, confirming her worst fears. While the tumor was ultimately diagnosed as benign, it was aggressive and required immediate surgery. Megan bravely underwent the procedure, followed by 23 rounds of radiotherapy when doctors discovered additional growth.

Throughout Megan’s treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center, doctors stumbled upon an even more dangerous tumor known as a glioma. Gliomas have the potential to cause severe brain damage, leaving Megan grappling with her worst nightmare.

For Megan, the cognitive issues resulting from the tumors have been the most challenging aspect to navigate. Dealing with memory loss and other cognitive impairments felt particularly difficult, as Megan knew her true capabilities extended far beyond her current struggles.

Dr. Sepideh Mokhtari, the Neuro-Oncologist who first discovered the tumor, explained that while initially tiny, the tumor had shown signs of gradual growth. Despite the ordeal, Megan considers herself lucky, as her prognosis allowed for effective treatment.

Enlightened by her experience, Megan now attends regular check-ups with her doctor due to the PTEN gene mutation that increases her susceptibility to other cancers. Thanks to vigilant monitoring, potential future hazards have been promptly identified and addressed.
