Woman Bitten by Shark on New York Beach: First Attack Since 1953

Bitten by a shark on a New York beach, a woman lost “about 10 kilos of flesh” during this attack which would be the first on this seafront since 1953.

Tatyana Koltunyuk was attacked while swimming off Rockaway Beach, the New York Post reported.

It was shortly before 6 p.m. Monday that a shark bit a large part of his left leg, just above his knee, according to sources who witnessed the event.

The teeth marks could suggest that the 65-year-old woman was attacked by a bull shark or a thresher shark. The possibility that she crossed a great white shark would not be excluded either, according to the New York daily.

“It feels like a single bite, quite sharp, with some force. You can see the spacing between the teeth,” Gavin Naylor, director of Florida’s shark research program, told the media.

Ms. Koltunyuk had been rescued and brought back to shore where first aid was given to her before paramedics arrived. She was still in critical but stable condition on Tuesday.

This attack by the animal is believed to be the first to take place since 1953, although a surfer reported a possible shark bite on this beach in 2017. His injury, however, was caused by something else, experts say.
