Wolf tears twelve sheep near Dresden

On the outskirts of Dresden there were wolf attacks for the third day in a row. Seven sheep were torn in Dresden-Weißig, four in Helfenberg. The two places are only five kilometers apart. One animal was killed in Ullersdorf. In all three cases, the crack assessors at the Wolf specialist center determined with certainty that the wolf was the cause.

Although the cracks occurred near the residential area, there was no danger to the population. On their forays through our cultural landscape, wolves also move close to settlements or occasionally within the residential area. It is not a conspicuous or behavior that is dangerous to humans. Like other wild animals, the wolf shuns direct contact with humans.

Appeal: better protect herds

In this context, the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology, Karin Bernhardt, appealed to the owners of sheep to better protect their herds. The corresponding fences would be funded 100 percent and there would be advice in her office, said Karin Bernhardt.

Jürgen Werner, the owner of the sheep in Weißig, had discovered his dead animals on the forest road. According to the “Sächsischer Zeitung”, the animal keeper does not receive any compensation, because his fence is from GDR times and does not meet the minimum requirements for security against wolves.

The cracks occurred in the area of the Dresdner Heide. The territory of the pack located there extends over the Dresdner Heide and the adjacent fields and meadows.
