DENPASAR, BALIPOST.com – The plan to spread the Wolbachia mosquito in Denpasar City has finally been postponed indefinitely. In fact, the plan is to spread Wolbachia at the end of this year.

Head of the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division of the Denpasar City Health Service, Dr. Anak Agung Ngurah Gede Dharmayuda, confirmed Monday (13/11), admitting the cancellation of the spread of this mosquito. “Canceled (today, ed). And it was postponed indefinitely,” he said.

They also received a letter from Save the Children if the event was temporarily postponed. Previously, the Denpasar City Government collaborated with the World Manguito Program (WMP) from Australia to develop Wolbachia bacteria.

By infecting mosquitoes that cause dengue fever with this bacteria, cases will be reduced. “The time period to see the development of the Wolbachia mosquito is 5 years. “In Klaten, Yogyakarta, over 5 years we can reduce dengue fever by up to 77 percent,” said Dharmayuda.

In Denpasar City, the plan is to start in November 2023. It is hoped that by 2024 cases can be reduced by 20 percent. Furthermore, the following year reduced cases by 50 percent, and up to 75 to 80 percent.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Denpasar, IGN Jaya Negara, said that the distribution of Wolbachia was a collaboration with a third party. The use of mosquitoes containing Wolbachia bacteria is to treat and suppress cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

He admitted that he would then wait for the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s recommendation. “We haven’t implemented it before we actually received a recommendation from the Ministry of Health. “Later it will be carried out if there is a recommendation and it will be carried out by the Ministry of Health,” he said.
