Wizz Air is planning flights from Vienna to seven cities on Friday

More destinations are to follow on Saturday. In total, the low-cost airline wants to fly to 20 destinations in May. And that despite landing bans and travel warnings.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air wants to resume flights from Vienna. The starting shot is to take place in four days on Friday. On May 1st, seven destinations are to be served: Dortmund, Thessaloniki, Rome, Milan, Lisbon, Oslo, Eindhoven. On Saturday, another six destinations – Athens, Cologne, Reykjavik, Tenerife, Tel Aviv and Varna – will be added.

Three other destinations – Larnaka, Valencia and Warsaw – are on the program from Sunday, May 3rd. The remaining four of the 20 destinations that Wizz Air is planning to launch are scheduled to arrive later this month: Kiev and Kharkiv from May 12, Ohrid from May 18 and Kutaisi from May 23. This emerges from documents that the airline’s PR agency submitted to APA on request.

Initially, the 20 cities should only be served two or three times a week, as the airline said last week.

Wizz Air had discontinued flight operations in Vienna as well as its competitors AUA and Laudamotion. The Hungarians are now the first airline to make a comeback. However, some of the 20 destinations are in countries from which there is currently no country permit in Austria for medical reasons. This means that the plane should not land in Austria when returning from Spain, for example.

The corresponding ordinance on landing bans for aircraft from corona risk areas is to be extended beyond April 30, according to the Foreign Ministry. For countries like Italy or Spain there is also an explicit travel warning because of the corona pandemic. Security level 4 applies to the rest of the world – a high security risk.
