Witness: The old man Mara sets out on a trip from Argentina to Brazil in search of a better haven

Mara, an elderly female elephant born in India, set out on a trip on Saturday from Buenos Aires to one of the animal shelters in Brazil where she will have a better life, as announced by the Argentine municipality.

Mara, between 50 and 54 years old, spent the first part of her life as a circus animal, then in 1995 she reached a zoo in Buenos Aires, which has since transformed into an ecological garden where these elephants lived.

Mara began its two-thousand-mile journey, which had been scheduled since January, despite the outbreak of the Coronavirus. A special protocol has been developed to protect and protect the accompanying crews.

Mara weighs 5.5 tons, is 5 meters long, 2 meters wide and 3 meters high. She consumes a ton of vegetables, fodder and sugar cane every day.

On Saturday, during a process that lasted approximately three hours in the ecological park located in the Palermo region of Buenos Aires, “Mara” was placed in a huge wooden box specially created for this matter and entered a truck with a crane.

The truck set out at about 6:00 pm (9:00 pm GMT). Its final destination is Chapada de Guimaraes, in Mato Grosso, a state in central-western Brazil, which includes an elephant reserve of 1,200 hectares, where Mara will live in the last days of her life.

The flight is expected to last between four and five days, according to a statement issued by the Buenos Aires municipality.
