Winter weather: Three injured students in a bus accident, Baum paralyzes the railway line

Winter has returned – and that also has an impact on the traffic situation: A regular bus left the street at Hallwang on Wednesday morning, three passengers were brought to the hospital with minor injuries. A fallen tree paralyzed the rail link between Bischofshofen and Hüttau.

Around 7 a.m. an accident occurred on the slippery road on Wiener Strasse in the Esch district of Hallwanger on the slippery road, which according to the transport association was heading towards Salzburg. The 46-year-old driver may have lost control of the vehicle. The 140 bus, which had around 40 passengers, hit the grass verge and crashed into an electricity pylon, where it came to a standstill. The Red Cross brought three students from Upper Austria aged 10, 12 and 13 to the state hospital with minor injuries. The volunteer fire department in Hallwang supported the operation. “Our task was limited to security work,” said local fire chief Manfred Hauser. A recovery company was requested to transport the heavily damaged bus.

Railway line in Pongau released again

A fallen tree paralyzed the rail link between Bischofshofen and Hüttau on Wednesday. The ÖBB blocked the route for several hours and set up a replacement rail service for long-distance traffic between Schladming and Bischofshofen and for local traffic between Hüttau and Bischofshofen. The route was released again at 12.38.

Handlebar injured in rear-end collision on A10

In a rear-end collision on the Tauern Autobahn (A10), a 29-year-old car driver from Carinthia was injured Wednesday morning. There was a traffic jam in the Brentenberg tunnel near Werfen when the man hit two small trucks in front of him. He was taken to the hospital in Schwarzach by the Red Cross. According to the police, the tunnel to Salzburg was closed until shortly before 8 a.m.

Due to the winter weather, traffic jams and considerable delays occurred in early morning traffic, especially in Flachgau and around the city of Salzburg. Further current traffic reports can be found here,

The railway line between Hüttau and Bischofshofen had to be temporarily closed on Wednesday.

Asfinag had already issued a fresh snow warning for the Tauern Autobahn on Wednesday night. The storm front announced by the meteorologists reached the state of Salzburg on Tuesday morning. This will primarily affect the apex route between Eben im Pongau and the Katschberg tunnel.

“We are prepared for the upcoming full deployment with all employees and additionally provided winter service vehicles in the championships Golling, Flachau and St. Michael”, says Heimo Maier-Farkas. He is the head of operational maintenance at Asfinag and has also “alerted various towing companies along the route.”

You should be ready for an emergency. If the onset of winter is particularly violent, heavy traffic on the right lane can be stopped as a preventive measure. As an alternative, there is the pyrrn route – snowfall is also announced there, but to a much lesser extent than on the Tauern Autobahn.

Storm gusts up to 110 km / h

Already on Tuesday morning the forecast of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) saw a lot coming to Salzburg: “In the morning a storm front pulls through (Flachgau at 06:30 with approx. 100-110 km / h / Pinzgau and Pongau at 07:00 90 km / h / Lungau from 08:00 with approx. 90 km / h) The front is followed by heavy downpours, which quickly change to snow down to 500 m. During the day it stays windy to stormy and it snows and rains repeatedly In the afternoon / evening, the snowfall line also drops to low altitudes. In the valleys, depending on the altitude, a layer of snow of 10 to 20 cm can build up until evening. Between the showers, it can tear open briefly, especially in the afternoon. In the morning 1 to 10 degrees , during the day the temperatures drop to 1 to 3 degrees. “

Trees fell, roof covered

In Abtenau, volunteers from the volunteer fire department disengaged shortly after 7.30 a.m. Two fallen trees completely blocked the roadway. The trees were chopped up using chainsaws and removed from the road.

In Zell am See, the roof of a boat garage was partially covered. The parts had flown onto the tracks of the nearby western railway line. Train traffic had to be blocked for just under two hours because the ongoing storm had to fear further danger to train traffic.

In Rauris, Taxenbach and Saalfelden, the emergency services also moved out to roofs covered by the storm.

“The most dangerous are the individual gusts of wind”

“The most dangerous thing about a storm are the individual gusts of wind,” says Renate Eschenlohr from ARBÖ Salzburg. Basically, you should avoid unnecessary trips when there is a storm warning. If this is not possible, the ARBÖ has put together five tips for correct behavior:

  • 1) Reduce speed and adapt driving behavior.
  • 2) Both hands on the steering wheel.
  • 4) Note roof loads: If you carry roof loads such as ski boxes or ski racks, you should definitely expect that the wind will have a larger contact surface. If possible, remove them in advance.
  • 5) Overtaking maneuvers should also be avoided. A deceptive wind hole can easily arise here – especially when trucks are overtaking. Often the gust hits you with full force. Go to protected areas if necessary.
