Winning the Election of Party Leader, Yoshihide Suga Will Become Japanese PM Page all

TOKYO, KOMPAS.com – Yoshihide Suga won the election for chairman of the LDP, Japan’s ruling party, on Monday (14/9/2020).

His victory paved the way for him to become Prime Minister (PM) of Japan after Shinzo Abe resign.

Reporting from The GuardianSuga won quite a heavy vote, namely 377 votes out of 543 votes coming from members of parliament and LDP Party branches throughout the Japanese prefecture.

Meanwhile, the two rivals only got a thin vote. Former Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida received 89 votes while former Japanese Foreign Minister Shigeru Ishiba only got 68 votes.

Suga previously served as Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan. He will officially become PM of Japan after the Japanese parliament, which is controlled by the LDP, voted on Wednesday (16/9/2020).

Previously, Suga was predicted as the strongest candidate for Prime Minister of Japan to replace Abe who resigned.

Before the election took place Suga’s position was quite strong.

He has the support of five of the LDP’s seven factions, the public broadcaster reported NHK on September 1st.

Suga’s most urgent task is to maintain the decline in cases corona virus daily in Japan lately.

He must also try to steer the economy of the Land of the Rising Sun out of a recession made worse by the coronavirus pandemic.

He also has an organizing job Olympic Tokyo next year after being postponed this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Suga is also faced with problems that Abe failed to address during his tenure including Japan’s aging population, low birth rates and a poor record on gender equality.

Reporting from Associated Press, Suga said that his main priority was fighting the corona virus and dealing with an economy that was hit by the corona virus pandemic.

He has repeatedly made notes under Abe’s administration when asked about various policies.

Despite his image as Abe’s right hand man, Suga is actually known for his iron-fisted approach to getting things done as policy coordinator and influencing bureaucrats using the centralized power of the PM’s office.

Suga says he is a reformer and he has worked to achieve policy by breaking the territorial boundaries of the bureaucracy.
