Wine from Space is aging faster than on Earth, how come? The all page

KOMPAS.com- Some time ago, cargo outer space SpaceX back from the station Outer Space International (ISS), and brought home a number of items, incl wine or drinks Red grape.

The researchers also conducted a study of several red wine drinks that have been on the ISS for about a year.

In the study, as reported from Space, Thursday (6/5/2021), shows that in addition to the changing taste of wine, this drink seems to be aging faster than the wines on Earth.

Previously, researchers sent 12 bottles of Bordeux wine to the space station using the Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo plane in November 2019.

The cargo spacecraft not only carries food supplies for the ISS astronauts.

But also carry some stuff to study how gravity or the zero gravity environment in outer space can affect grapes or wines as they get older.

Wine It remained in a closed tube in the orbiting laboratory for 438 days and 19 hours before returning to Earth in SpaceX Dragon’s cargo spacecraft in January 2020.

Compared to the same bottle of wine that ages in the same time on Earth, red wine that ages on International Space Station, maybe much older, one to two years, or even three years older.

“It’s actually maybe one to two or even three years more evolved than you would expect from the aging wines on Earth,” said wine author Jane Anson.

Anson was one of 12 panelists who participated in the taste test after the wine returned from space.

Of the panelists, five (including Anson) were professional wine tasters.

For the first part of the test, the panelists were given three glasses of wine, without knowing which glass contained wine from outer space.

“At the time we were looking for aromatic and visual, if we could see a difference. We basically had to choose which of the three was different,” said Anson.

“And in between, I saw a difference in the evolution of wine color in one of them. I don’t know which one,” he added.

For the second part of the test, the panelists made a direct comparison by tasting the two wines. According to Anson, the taste of these two wines is fantastic.

“One of the main things to look at at first is, is this wine holding up? Are both of them good quality? And the answer to that will definitely be, yes,” said Anson.

“Unanimously, both wines are considered fine wines, which means that despite staying for 14 months on the International Space Station, ‘space wine’ is evaluated very well sensory,” said Philippe Darriet, a researcher at the University of Bordeaux, France.
