Windows XP mistakenly revealed the source code of the operating system

The famous operating system Windows XP, now happily retired, he may have a problem: the source code was accidentally released on the Net on the 4chan forum. For four long hours, users were in fact able to download the source code of one of the most successful operating systems, through BitTorrent and Mega. In itself this is not a great threat, as XP was officially downloaded from Microsoft in 2014. In fact, since then no official updates have been made by the developers of the parent company.

To date, however, it is estimated that Windows XP still does installed on approximately 1% of computers active in the world, a small percentage but still an important number. The possible threat, however, does not concern aficionados but something else.

XP source made its appearance in a thread of the well-known 4chan forum last September 24th. Initially it was thought it was a fake but after passing under the magnifying glass of researchers and security experts, confirmation arrived. This is the source code of one of the most used operating systems in the past years. Although they have passed only 4 hours before the links were removed, it is difficult – not to say impossible – to determine how many people have actually come into possession. People who, of course, could in turn share it on the numerous filesharing platforms.

As we said, however, the threat is another. Starting from the XP code, any malicious people could steal valuable information on the algorithms used by Microsoft and create new tools to attack the latest OS, Windows 10 on all. Microsoft’s comment was not long in coming but, at the moment, it appears more like a facade statement waiting to understand more: “We are investigating what happened.”
