Windows 12 on the horizon. Microsoft is returning to a three-year refresh cycle

In a few days it will be seven years since Windows 10 was released. Microsoft claimed then that it would be the last Windows ever, but last year it broke that promise. And apparently the “elevens” won’t be the last either. Zac Bowden from the server WindowsCentral got exclusive information about Microsoft’s future plans for Windows.

According to the published “schedule”, Microsoft intends to release a new major version every three years, which is the same cadence as in the days of Windows Vista, 7 or 8. If the people of Redmond do not deviate from this plan, this means that we should see Windows 12 in 2024 .But that doesn’t mean we won’t get any news for years in between, according to Zac Bowden we can look forward to the influx of new features even in the time between major versions.

The upcoming major Windows 11 update (designated 22H2 aka Sun Valley 2), which is likely to arrive in the coming weeks, will reportedly be the last of its kind. Microsoft was also preparing the Sun Valley 3 update for next year, but canceled plans for its release – instead, the upcoming news will be broken down into smaller updates that will be released from 2023, with a cadence of up to 4 updates per year.

Don’t overlook

Microsoft completed the Windows 11 summer update. At Build, it also presented other upcoming news

Microsoft tested this spring that new features can be added to Windows 11 without having to release a new version – the Redmond people internally refer to these small releases as “Moments”. In the future, it will probably work in such a way that, as soon as the Insiders have sufficiently tested the upcoming news, Microsoft will package them into one “Moment” and send them to the Windows Update service. And in the background it will be tinkering with a new major version of the system in the meantime.

Windows 12 is reportedly referred to internally as the “Next Valley”, but what the new system will bring is largely unknown. We can only hope that the hardware requirements will not be increased again and many more computers will be removed from support.
