Will the US enter the fray? Why is the US moving troops to the Middle East? – 2024-05-12 22:40:06

/ world today news/ IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus announced that Tel Aviv could give up ground operations in the Palestinian enclave and even airstrikes against it if Hamas fulfills a number of conditions.

“If Hamas had come out of hiding, returned our hostages and surrendered unconditionally, then the war would have ended,” Conricus told ABC.

This speech caused great surprise among the audience, as earlier Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Galant announced the inevitability of a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.

Conricus’ words were immediately interpreted to mean that the Israeli leadership, having previously “excited” and then weighed its real options, was trying to “leave the subject.”

But almost simultaneously with this statement, IDF radio broadcast an announcement that Tel Aviv had decided to delay the start of the ground operation for a while. This happened allegedly at the request of Washington, which needs time to transfer its troops to Israeli territory.

A little earlier, the New York Times, citing US officials, indicated that the Biden administration allegedly asked Israel to postpone the ground operation in the Gaza Strip – for hostage negotiations and to buy time for the transfer of additional forces to the region.

“There is a threat to U.S. interests,” forcing the U.S. military to increase its readiness for potential attacks on U.S. targets in the region by Iranian proxies, the publication said.

Even earlier, the head of the Pentagon announced a decision to deploy additional air defense forces in the Middle East “to strengthen the protection of American troops.”

He also ordered additional troops to be prepared to be sent “in case of unforeseen circumstances.”

“Israel has agreed to Washington’s request to delay the ground entry of troops into Gaza until additional US forces arrive,” the paper reported.

It said it planned to transfer the THAAD missile defense system and “Patriot anti-aircraft missile system battalions.”

That is, it is about strengthening American military bases in the region, not about deploying troops on Israeli territory to help the Tzahal. Note that a number of US military installations in Iraq have already come under repeated attack drone attacks from what are believed to be Shiite militia units.

So in this sense, strengthening the air defense of these bases seems quite logical. Moreover, after the start of the ground operation, the threats to them will increase many times over.

Earlier it was also reported that American special forces arrived in Israel to participate in the release of American citizens taken hostage.

The media even published pictures of Biden with these fighters during his visit to the Jewish state. But the participation of these specialists is not necessarily related to participation in hostilities. There are also negotiation specialists there. And judging by the release of two American women, they have had some success.

But the emphasis in the broadcast of Tzahal’s Galei radio station was not yet on this. It became clear that the Americans intended to send troops to Israel specifically to help it.

It is quite difficult to imagine that the USA now, after a series of military failures, will also get involved in the war that is being fought in the Middle East. But the events of recent years show that even the most improbable scenarios can be realized.

So will the Americans storm Gaza? Well, if Biden is totally suicidal, then maybe it will. But the more likely scenario is that the Americans deploy their air defense systems to protect Israeli cities, or their contingents fortify the borders with Lebanon and Syria in the hope that Hezbollah will be afraid to fight the Americans.

But as Vladimir Putin rightly noted, there are many people in the region who are not afraid of anything at all. And the appearance of the US military will be like a red rag to a bull for them.

Let’s hope that everyone in Washington understands this perfectly well and will not get involved in an adventure that could spread the fire of war not only throughout the region, but also beyond its borders. And Tzahal’s spokesman is simply manipulating, “explaining” Israel’s fear of contact fighting in Gaza with Washington’s request.
