MWC 2019? Intelligent connectivity!

Following the coronavirus epidemic, a number of giants such as Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, LG and now Sony have decided to reshape their communication at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, a fair that attracts more than 100 ‘ 000 people from some 200 countries. Is this raout justified in the era of fiber, 5G, artificial intelligence and unmarked mobile? “Intelligent connectivity”, right?

Indeed, when we know what the impact of air traffic on the production of greenhouse gases is, we can wonder about the holding of such an event which claims however to be “neutral from a point of view carbon”. Depends on calculations and methodology, probably … According to the 2019 report MWC, even if 64% of the visitors are European, 13% come from the Americas and 16% from Asia and the Pacific … The 2020 edition, scheduled from February 24 to 27, 2020, could be slightly different.

What carbon footprint for these high-tech masses?

For the record, it is always worth remembering that a plane ticket Tokyo-Barcelona, for example, represents 3.5 tonnes of CO2 in economy class and almost 6.6 tonnes in Business Class, according to myclimate. Even a small Helsinki-Barcelona approaches the tonne of CO2 in eco and flirts with the two tonnes in business, to stay in Europe… For comparison, the Confederation aims for 1.5 tonnes per person by 2050, according to EMPA who brilliantly staged some figures recently…

So you don’t have to be a genius to understand the climate impact of the displacement of tens of thousands of people by plane or by road, especially during such gatherings. The same EMPA comparison, already mentioned here, however suggests more pragmatic solutions, even if they generate a little CO2 …

Why not stream?

Streaming, for example, even if it requires a significant amount of energy when it is used massively, remains clearly less energy-consuming than 10,000 business flights on the European continent alone… The coronavirus is perhaps an opportunity to wonder what should be big fairs like MWC… And how they are connected by rail to the rest of the continent? Barcelona is catastrophic.

An Ericsson therefore simply canceled participation in MWC and will skillfully offer local events, while several Chinese behemoths have asked their employees to quarantine before MWC. A more pragmatic Sony, will offer a streaming of his novelties. In any case, a number of big brands are now snubbing this kind of route or prefer to organize their own on other dates, which is even worse ecologically …

To meditate…
