Will Jan Jambon remain Flemish Prime Minister after the 2024 elections? “I am not a career politician, but a team player at the disposal of the coach” | Interior

Who will be the next Prime Minister of Flanders? Zuhal Demir’s name often comes up, but what about the current Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA)? He remains vague about a second term. “I am not a career politician, but a team player at the disposal of the coach,” he says in ‘De Morgen’ on Radio 1.

The 2024 election year is still a long way off, but that doesn’t stop speculation about who will be the next prime minister. Ask five Flemings who will be the next head of government of Flanders and there is a good chance that Zuhal Demir’s name will come up at least once. However, this is not yet a foregone conclusion for the N-VA.

The current Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) has not yet decided on a second term. “I am not a career politician, but a team player at the disposal of the coach. I was never a candidate for anything. I never made any demands internally either. I am not a candidate for Prime Minister, but I am not a non-candidate either. We will see how the voter plays the cards.”

Jan Jambon, Flemish Prime Minister

It does not bother Jambon that names such as Zuhal Demir and Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) regularly appear in the media as possible successors. “Isn’t it logical to look at the upcoming talent of the party? Many people could do this job. Ultimately, we will look together at what is best.” During the interview with his VRT colleagues, he does not want to dwell on it for too long. “We are not yet working on the list. I am busy governing Flanders.”

Don’t stop being a politician

Jambon wants to continue as a politician after the elections anyway. “In 2024 I will be 64 years old. For me, that is not an age to stop politics,” he says. “But at a certain point, the voter lays the cards and we line up our team as best we can.”

He is clear about his ambitions in Brasschaat. Jambon hopes to succeed himself as mayor there in 2024. “It is a wonderful municipality and an honor to be mayor here. I will draw the list and I am a candidate for mayor.”
