Will cigarettes disappear forever?

After 10 to 20 years, there may be no smokers in many markets. Governments and tobacco companies are on the same side in this change, as more and more countries adopt smoke-free targets, and companies push smokers to lower-risk products such as e-cigarettes and nicotine by mouth.

According to analyst Owen Bennett, there is a growing synchronization of regulators and the ambitions of the tobacco industry, in many countries within a generation the lack of smokers can become a reality.

The view that cigarettes could be “more” is also supported by Citigroup Inc., which expects smoking to disappear by 2050 from the United States, parts of Europe, Australia and large areas of Latin America if the downward trend observed in recent decades, continued.

“Smoking has been declining over the past five decades because of what we call the ESG Squeeze: public pressure, regulation and taxation,” wrote Citi analyst Adam Spielman this month.
