Will Bremen become climate neutral? Public online discussions on February 16 and 21

After the Bremen climate protection target for 2020 was clearly missed, a new start is necessary. Instead of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent (compared to 1990), only a little less than 20 percent was achieved. For this reason, the Bremen Parliament set up a commission of inquiry for the first time to work across factions on the realignment of Bremen’s climate policy. For 18 months, nine members of the parliament and just as many external experts discussed how Bremen can contribute to slowing down global warming and climate change. The state of Bremen wants to achieve climate neutrality by 2038 – this is the goal formulated in the final report of the Bremen Climate Protection Enquete Commission, which was presented on December 17, 2021. With a view to these results and future climate policy, the International Degree in Political Management (ISPM) at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences invites you to two public online discussion events.

On Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 5 p.m., the focus will be on “Bremer steelworks in transition”. The focus is on the most important field of action for climate protection in Bremen – the conversion of steel production to hydrogen technology and the opportunities for a climate-neutral industrial site.

The commission of inquiry has recommended concrete measures. To what extent can these measures be implemented and what are the next steps that need to be taken by business and the Bremen government? This also raises the question of financing and providing the necessary infrastructure to ensure an adequate supply of hydrogen.
The managing director of the Bremen steelworks from Arcelor Mittal, Reiner Blaschek, the Senator for Economics Kristina Vogt (left) and the chairwoman of the BUND Bremen, Klaus Prietzel, will take part.

The second discussion round on Monday, February 21, 2022, 5 p.m., topic: “The results of the climate study – Bremen’s path to climate neutrality?” deals with the importance of the study commission for Bremen’s climate policy in the coming years and the opportunities for the Implementation of the most important measures.

The key questions are: Why was the Commission needed to develop a climate protection program? Can the results of the Enquete Bremen lead to climate neutrality? What controversies are to be expected in Bremen’s politics and society? How can the financing of the necessary measures be secured? And: What influence does Bremen, as a small two-city state in a multi-level system, have in order to achieve progress in climate protection?
The environment senator will answer these and other questions Dr. Maike Schäfer (Greens), Commission Chair Martin Michalik (CDU) and Katja Muchow, Deputy Managing Director of the BUND Bremen, will discuss.

“We have created a milestone in Bremen’s climate policy here, which to my knowledge is also unique for all federal states. The goal of making the entire country climate-neutral by 2038 is ambitious but realistic,” said the chairman of the commission, Martin Michalik (CDU), on the occasion of the publication of the final report.
