Wild strike KLM baggage staff, strikers demand meeting with director

Journalist Doron Sajet of NH Nieuws reports that about 150 employees are participating in the strike. It is unclear what the immediate consequences of the strike will be.

The Schiphol site shows that at least seven KLM flights have been canceled until 10 a.m. It is not clear whether this has to do with the strike. A KLM spokesperson says that “information is currently being collected” and a Schiphol spokesperson says that the consequences are being “mapped”.

FNV writes in a press release that the baggage staff received an email on Thursday evening that part of the work would be outsourced to baggage handler Viggo. This should address the staff shortage, but according to the baggage workers, the lack of people is mainly due to the “very bad” working conditions. “And KLM refuses to do anything about it.”

Conversation with CEO

The striking KLM employees demand a meeting with KLM director René de Groot. FNV says it is prepared to act as a mediator.

Although FNV did not organize the strike, the union says it is not surprised by the action of the employees. In a recent members’ consultation, the KLM staff indicated that they would no longer accept the enormous work pressure and that they demand real solutions, according to FNV.
