Bilyana Mihailova, who is currently in hospital, denies being a victim of domestic violence. She tells that the midnight conflict between her and her husband is an ordinary domestic scandal.
Hours after the arrest of Pernik prosecutor Biser Mihailov for beating, Stoyan Neshev spoke with his wife Bilyana, who, according to the prosecution, is a victim of domestic violence. We are contacting her via video link as she is in hospital.
Stoyan Neshev: How are you, how do you feel? And where are you now?
Bilyana Mihailova: Thank you! I feel good. I’m in hospital right now. They put me under observation for a while, but I have no complaints.
Stoyan Neshev: I see a bruise under your eye. It is a consequence of what?
Bilyana Mihailova: It is most likely a consequence of the impact from the fall. I had some mild swelling which then went down to the eye.
Stoyan Neshev: But isn’t this bruise from a beating? Am I to understand that?
Bilyana Mihailova: No. Is not.
According to Bilyana, what happened to her husband was a family scandal. “I am categorically not a victim of domestic violence. Last night there was a simple argument between us, which turned into a scandal. A simple domestic scandal, as there is in every family,” she claims.
Stoyan Neshev: And how did it happen that both the police and the prosecutor’s office became sympathetic to this family scandal of yours?
Bilyana Mihailova: Our daughter was in the bathroom at the time and after hearing our escalated argument, she called 112.
The woman says that there were no eyewitnesses. “I have a head injury that is from falling to the ground. I think I tripped more. Or I lost my balance more and then I fell and that’s where I got this head injury,” she claims.
Stoyan Neshev: But did your husband touch you?
Bilyana Mihailova: My husband did not touch me or hit me.
Stoyan Neshev: Did you lose consciousness?
Bilyana Mihailova: No, maybe from the strong adrenaline, from the emotions I felt during this scandal. Then my daughter when she called the police and an ambulance came – I just thought I was missing some moments. But now I realize what happened and I didn’t lose consciousness. I did not testify against my husband. I gave explanations, which I told you. I told them I didn’t remember some things that I later realized I didn’t have memory loss and I remembered them very well.
Stoyan Neshev: Is it possible that you did not testify against him because you were afraid?
Bilyana Mihailova: No, I’m definitely not afraid.
The Mihailovi family’s problems with justice began last year, when their son Vasil became a defendant in several cases for bodily harm and threats to kill.
Stoyan Neshev: Did your son grow up in a violent family?
Bilyana Mihailova: No, he definitely did not grow up in a violent family.
Stoyan Neshev: Are you ready to live with your husband under the same roof again, because we heard that the prosecutor’s office said that they will ask for his permanent arrest, as he is dangerous for you?
Bilyana Mihailova: I don’t think that my husband is dangerous for us to live under the same roof. I think what happened between us can be fixed. Let us resolve it between ourselves, not in front of the media and the state.
