Why Turkmenistan President Closes ‘Gates to Hell’

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has reportedly ordered the closure of the site known internationally as the ‘The Gates of Hell‘. This is the reason the president closed the gates of hell in Turkmenistan.

The site is officially named Darvaza Crater, after the city in which it is located.

The crater was formed in the early 1970s, when a landslide occurred during a Soviet gas drilling expedition.

At that time, scientists reportedly lit a fire in a large vent to prevent the spread of natural gas. However, that fire continues to burn to this day.

Although the crater has become a tourist attraction, Berdymukhamedov is reported by the state newspaper Neytralny Turkmenistan, has asked his cabinet to find a way to close the ‘Gate of Hell’.

He wanted to close the ‘Gate of Hell’ because of the negative effects on the health of the people living around the crater, wasting precious natural gas resources, and damaging the environment.

The newspaper also said the deputy prime minister of Turkmenistan had been instructed to gather scientists and if necessary call in foreign consultants to find solutions to extinguish the fire.

Until now, no one knows how long it will take to close or extinguish the fire at Darvaza Crater.

In 2010, Berdimuhamedow visited the crater and said that the crater should be closed.

However, in 2013 he instead declared the part of the desert that contains the crater as a nature reserve.

Currently, Darvaza crater is a tourist attraction that is able to attract hundreds of tourists who want to see this strange and scary-looking phenomenon every year.

The crater is still brightly lit and at night the orange glow can be seen for miles. And now, Darvasa crater is planned to be closed again.
