The algorithms of the music platforms should recognize our tastes. But they are often wrong – especially with listeners who don’t just like mainstream. Graz researchers have now investigated what distinguishes them and how they could be better served.
University professors also listen to metal music. The computer scientist Elisabeth Lex from TU Graz shares her passion with colleagues, and they complain in unison: the music streaming platforms do not recognize their taste. Whether Spotify, YouTube, Apple, Amazon or Last FM: The providers promise to create tailor-made playlists for every listener and recommend bands that they should like. But then they suggest the current number one hit that metal fans never want to hear.
