Why People Get Fat in Winter: Endocrinologist Reveals Two Culprits and Solutions

An endocrinrologist named two reasons why people get fat in winter – what to do

The culprits turned out to be vitamin D and thyroid hormones.

Most reasons for weight gain in winter are related to hormones. There are two main “endocrinological” culprits: vitamin D and thyroid hormones. Natalya Tanygina, an endocrinologist at the central medical clinic CMD Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, candidate of medical sciences, spoke about this.

According to the doctor, vitamin D has an effect on fat metabolism: a deficiency causes a deterioration in insulin sensitivity. This causes more insulin to be produced and promotes fat storage.

– It is known that the level of vitamin D in the body largely depends on the amount of sunlight, or rather, ultraviolet radiation. Residents of most regions of Russia are much more susceptible to vitamin D deficiency than residents of southern countries, explained Tanygina Healthy eating.

The second culprit for weight gain is the thyroid gland. In winter, due to a lack of sunlight, as well as a decrease in air temperature, a person needs more resources to maintain a comfortable existence, and, accordingly, the thyroid gland has to work harder. If the thyroid gland works well, it will easily carry out this load. However, situations often arise when the authority cannot cope with increased demands. In such a situation, metabolism may slow down, which will lead to rapid weight gain and difficulty losing it.

To influence the situation, the endocrinologist advises taking small doses of vitamin D in the autumn-winter period. The thyroid gland can be supported with iodine supplements.
